What is what area code is 704?

Area code 704 serves the southwestern region of North Carolina. It covers the city of Charlotte, as well as many of its surrounding suburban areas. The area code was established in 1947 as one of the original area codes in North America. Due to population growth, the 704 area was split in 1998, creating area code 910 for the southeastern portion of the original region. In 2000, area code 980 was introduced as an overlay to 704, meaning both area codes serve the same geographic area. This means that 10-digit dialing is required for all calls within the 704/980 region.
